Saturday 12th March, 9.30 - 4.00 Shibori techniques
World Shibori Network artists, Barbara Schey and Joan James will be giving a 2 day workshop in shibori techniques on 12th and 13th March, 2011, at the Village Hall, Strathnairn Homestead. Both Barbara and Joan have exhibited their work in exhibitions overseas and have taught extensively throughout Australia. Barbara will work with DISAPPEARING SHIBORI! on Saturday 12th March, 9.30 - 4.00.
This workshop will involve discharge or colour removal on silk and cotton in new and innovative ways using techniques Barbara learned in Japan. Degumming of silk and melt off of lame will also be included if time permits. Barbara has been teaching this workshop for some time now and it is very popular. Students need to bring pure silk in a dark colour, also pure cotton in a dark colour. Barbara gets good results from pure cotton (black) voile available from Spotlight (makes great sarongs!). For the silk discharge, she recommends black silk georgette. Silk organza is needed for the degum and small amount of lame for melt off.
4 weekends from end of July to mid August Wood Fire up at Strathnairn
A ceramics community wood firing in the famous Olsen kiln at Strathnairn built in 1996 during the National Ceramics Conference is to be fired up again in conjunction with the symposium Material Matters Clay month in Canberra.
Expressions of interest are invited for a limited number of places to take part in this exciting firing and mini symposium on wood fire conducted by leading local ceramic artists and wood fire experts Ian Jones and Moraig McKenna.
