» Robert Puruntatameri   February - April 2011
The first artist in residence for 2011 will be Robert Puruntatameri from Tiwi Islands. Robert is a skilled potter and decorator and last visited Strathnairn in 1996, when a group of TIWI potters painted their designs on the Olsen wood fire kiln. This residency has been planned to coincide with the Remote Communities Ceramic Network project at ANU Ceramics Workshop.

Tony has an international profile as a potter, having exhibited in Europe, Japan and North America, with works also featured in the collections of several major galleries in Australia. He has been a pioneer of the long wood-fired ceramics technique in Australia - a technique he has been practising for 25 years.

Paris, France. "Clay is part of me. It is my language. I became captivated at 20 and I knew instinctively that it would become a lifelong commitment. I am basically self-taught: I embarked on an unstructured exploration of materials, techniques, shapes, colours, textures. Still today, I cannot limit my work to a single technique making my style recognizable. It is the incredible versatility of clay that attracts me most, with its endless possibilities".

Owen Rye has been studying, practicing, teaching and writing about ceramic art for 40 years. His contributions to the field are well documented: the list of publications, conference presentations and exhibitions spans seven pages in his curriculum vitae. He is a well-known leader in the woodfire movement in Australia and overseas, and his interest in all things involving clay and fire has made him a valued teacher across the broad spectrum of ceramics.

"Recently, after earning my MFA from Utah State University in Logan Utah I moved to Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg Tennessee to work as a resident artist. I am originally from Kentucky where I studied at Transylvania University and University of Louisville. I have had the opportunity to speak and exhibit nationally and internationally and am continually inspired by the craft community".

» Gwanji Monks   October - December 2008
Well know artist from the Northern rivers area sculpting in clay, stone and wood. creating architectural forms in various scales. Gwanji will spend from late September to December as Artist in Residence at Starthnairn Arts Association . During his stay he will be conducting workshops and working towards an exhibition created using facilities available at Strathnairn.

Jasmine Schiedler has been predominantly investigating ceramic glazes and tea bowl forms. Jasmine will conduct workshops in ceramics for children and work towards an exhibition with Gwanji Monks using facilities available at Strathnairn.
» Stefan Jakob   February - April 2008
Stefan Jakob is a potter from Switzerland who was artist in residence from the beginning of February 2008. Raku firing is his predominant technology. Surface textures and the interaction of black and white are of particular interest to Stefan. To further pursue his interest in "surface textures", Stefan based his work at Strathnairn on inspirations gain from rock formations, seen while journeying in Australia. His exhibition featured containers and objects with richly textured layers. These are layers are transferred to the surface through hand building techniques and raku fired. Stefan also ran workshops while at Strathnairn.

Ceramic artist Daniel Evan's pieces are both visual illusions that sweep the viewer into distant landscapes as well as physical realities capable of bending sound waves and breaking backs. Ultimately, trying to locate himself physically, emotionally and spiritually within the imaginary and the concrete. Evans currently heads the Ceramics Department at Vincennes University in Southern Indiana, USA.
» Fergus Stewart   January - February 2007
Fergus Stewart resides in Lochinver, Scotland where he is a consultant and visiting potter at Highland Stoneware. Fergus has been involved in ceramics both as a maker and teacher since 1981 and has built and fired many woodfire kilns for woodfiring and salt-glazing in Australia, Scotland and Denmark.
» Ryozo Shibata   October - December 2006
Ryozo Shibata was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1952. He received his MFA in 1978 from Kyoto University of Fine arts. He specializes in sometsuke, blue and white porcelain ware, combining his skill in traditional techniques with contemporary forms. Shibata has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, and has received many awards. He is a member of the Japanese Arts and Crafts Association, and lives and works in Kyoto, Japan.
